CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Mathematics - popularly known as the 'Queen of all Sciences' is regarded as a core part of the school curriculum across the world. It is also in the core curriculum for a wide range of basic, higher and professional courses. Many teachers, educators and mathematicians have responded to the challenge of teaching mathematics effectively in diverse ways. They have developed powerful pedagogical approaches or learning materials and introduced innovations in their teaching. Many others have worked with teachers or with students, and some have taken up research to understand more deeply the teaching and learning of mathematics.

To discuss the current status and trends in mathematics education research and the practice of mathematics teaching at all levels, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), a constituent of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has been organising the International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME) every four years. The Congress gathers a broad spectrum of participants, such as researchers in mathematics education, teacher educators, practicing teachers, mathematicians and others interested in mathematics education.

One of the important academic activities of ICME is National Presentation; during which the representatives of a particular country will make a presentation on the current status and trends in mathematics education in that country. An exhibition, video shows, CD-ROMs and so forth may accompany these national presentations. India will make one of the national presentations in the ICME -12 (www.icme12.org) scheduled to be held at Seoul, S.Korea from 8 - 15, July 2012.

One of the important academic activities of ICME is National Presentations; during which the representatives of a particular country make a presentation on the current status and trends in mathematics education of that country. In the forthcoming ICME-12 (www.icme12.org), scheduled to be held at Seoul, South Korea from 8-15, July 2012, India will make one of the national presentations.

To provide an input for the national presentation of our country and to bring together on a single platform, the important and significant innovations and efforts in improving mathematics education in school and in higher education, a National Initiative on Mathematics Education - Northern Region Conference is being organised from November 21-23, 2011 at New Delhi. This regional conference aims to build awareness of such efforts in the Northern Region: Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

The deliberations of the regional conference will provide an input for a report on the status of mathematics education in India, which is being compiled under the auspices of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Teachers, educators and mathematicians working in the Northern Region are invited to send their submissions to the conference on any one of the following themes:

  1. Systemic and policy aspects of mathematics education.
  2. Mathematics curriculum and pedagogy at elementary, secondary and tertiary levels.
  3. Teacher education and development in mathematics education.

Submission of Proposals:

Presentation at the conference on the listed themes, reflecting the work done in Northern Region, can be in the form of an Oral Presentation or a Poster Exhibit. For an Oral Presentation authors have to submit an extended abstract of about 1000 words and for a Poster Exhibit the presenters must submit an abstract of about 500 words. In either case the abstract must contain an outline of the study, its aim, the period covered, a brief description of the conduct of the research and the outcome. Authors must take care to support their claims with evidence and give proper references in the abstract.

The total number of participants is limited to 120. We will be short-listing applicants and the short-listed participants will be informed by email by October 25, 2011.
