CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Mathematics - Popularly known as the 'Queen of all Sciences' is regarded as a core part of the school curriculum across the world. It is also in the core curriculum for a wide range of basic and professional courses. Many teachers, educators and mathematicians have responded to the challenge of teaching mathematics effectively in diverse ways: some have developed powerful pedagogical approaches or learning materials, some have introduced innovations in their teaching, some have worked with teachers, some with students, and some have taken up research to understand more deeply the teaching and learning of mathematics.
To discuss the current status and trends in mathematics education research and in the practice of mathematics teaching at all levels, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), a constituent of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has been organizing the International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME), every four years. The Congress will gather a broad spectrum of participants such as researchers in mathematics education, teacher educators, practicing teachers, mathematicians and others interested in mathematics education.
One of the important academic activities of ICME is National Presentation; during which the representatives of a particular country will make a presentation on the current status and trends in mathematics education in that country. An exhibition, video shows, CD-ROMs and so forth may accompany these national presentations. India will make one of the national presentations in the ICME -12 (www.icme12.org) scheduled to be held at Seoul, S.Korea from 8 - 15, July 2012.
To provide an input for the national presentation of our country and to bring together on a single platform the important and significant innovations and efforts to improve mathematics education in school and in higher education, a Southern Regional Conference on Mathematics education is being organized from 11 - 13, November 2011 at Cochin.
This conference aims to build awareness of such efforts in the community of mathematics educators in the Southern Region - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala. The proceedings of the conference will also be an input for a report on the status of mathematics education in India, which is being compiled under the auspices of the Indian National Science Academy.
Teachers, educators and mathematicians belonging to the Southern Region are invited to send their submissions to the conference on any one of the following themes:
- Historical and cultural aspects of mathematics and mathematics education
- Mathematics curriculum and pedagogy at various levels: elementary, secondary and tertiary education, including nurture and enrichment initiatives.
- Teacher education and development
Submission of Proposals:
Presentation at the conference on these and related themes can be in the form of poster exhibit or an oral presentation. For both the forms, authors have to submit an extended abstract of about 500 words on their study / innovation / theoretical analysis. The abstract should contain a brief description of the aim of study or innovation, the target group, the period of the intervention, description of what was done and the outcomes. Please send the extended abstract to vambat@gmail.com.
Deadlines and Important dates:
- Submission of proposal : 5 October 2011
- Notification of acceptance of proposal:15 October 2011
- Registration :20 October 2011
- Final submission of written report/poster:30 October 2011
